How to resolve MSBlast Worm causing computer shutdowns

If your system is continually rebooting (restarting) or you want to ensure that your computer is safe from the MSBlast Worm, please follow the steps outlined below.

  1. Press and hold down the Control and Alt keys and then hit your Delete key once.
  2. Click the Task Manager button.
  3. Click on the Processes tab.

  4. Click the Image Name column to sort the list in alphabetical order.

  5. If you see msblast.exe file, click on it once. Then, click the End Process button. If you do not see msblast.exe in the list of running tasks, please proceed to Step 6 to apply the Microsoft patch and check your system for the Worm.

  6. Now you can close the Windows Task Manager screen by clicking the X in the upper right hand corner.

  7. Next you will need to determine which operating system you are using. Click on the Start button, go up to Run and type winver. The window displayed will indicate which operating system is being used (Windows® 2000, Windows® XP, etc.) If you are running Windows 95, 98 or ME you will not be affected by this worm.

  8. Once you have determined your operating system click on the link for your operating system from the Microsoft Web site.

  9. Click download on the right side of the page.

  10. Choose Run from this location or Open.

  11. Confirm security warning pop-up by clicking Yes.
  12. Follow pop-up instructions.
  13. Once your computer has finished click this link and when prompted click open.
  14. Click the Start button displayed on the Symantec W32.Blaster.Worm.Fix Tool. The tool will begin analyzing your files and folders for the worm and may take several minutes to complete.

  15. When it has finished, you will have successfully checked your system for the MSBlast Worm and installed the patch.
